German teacher for AP/DSD test prep classes

South Bay Deutscher Schulverein (SBDS) is a vibrant community organization dedicated to fostering a love of German language and culture. We provide a supportive and enriching environment on Saturdays for students of all ages to learn and grow. Our most advanced students regularly pass the AP, DSD 1, and DSD 2 tests, reaching German proficiency and certification to study at German universities. SBDS is a 501(c)3 non-profit school with approximately 250 students in 21 classes.

Position summary

SBDS seeks a passionate German teacher to instruct teenagers (ages 12-18). The successful candidate will be responsible for increasing students’ proficiency in German language and preparing them for success on standardized tests, including the AP German Language and Culture Exam, and the Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD 1 and DSD 2) examinations.

Classes take place on Saturdays from September to May.

This position provides the opportunity to obtain DSD test administration certification. SBDS will cover the costs of this training and certification.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging and effective German language lessons aligned with the German curriculum and student learning objectives.
  • Prepare students for success on the AP German Language and Culture Exam, DSD 1, and DSD 2 examinations through targeted instruction, practice exercises, and exam preparation strategies.
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that fosters student engagement and encourages active participation.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of all students.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and school administrators to ensure program effectiveness.
  • Participate in and support SBDS community events, such as Maifest, Weihnachtsfest, and other cultural activities.
  • During the 2025-26 school year, the candidate will be paid to shadow the current teacher on Saturdays. This will provide the candidate with the opportunity to become familiar with the school as well as the test preparation classes / curriculum, and with the test administration. The expectation is that the candidate will then take over as the AP and DSD teacher beginning with the 2026-27 school year.

Required qualifications

  • Native fluency in German.
  • Authorized to work in the US for any employer.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of German grammar, vocabulary, and cultural concepts.
  • Ability to effectively teach in a group setting of up to 16 students.

Preferred qualifications

  • Proven experience teaching German to teenagers (ages 12-18) in a classroom or similar setting.
  • Enthusiasm for engaging with students and the broader SBDS community.

Compensation

The expected pay range for this position is $4,000 – $15,000, based on actual hours worked.The
expectation is that during the 2025-26 school year the hours will be less as the candidate will be
shadowing the current teacher. The candidate will be compensated for the number of teaching
hours, preparation time, teacher meetings and training, and managing and administering
standardized tests.
